We Are

We Are

A Poem by Marie Anzalone
"

poem for children, adolescents and youth- different perspectives on a single tree visited with a group of middle school students

"

Our tree:

can see into windows.

is tall, round, bumpy, hairy;

green, gray, brown, and water.

is grumpy. is friendly.

is sometimes messy.

smells like my mom’s garden.

comforts me when I need to cry.

sings to me with the voice of birds

in the morning. holds the moon

in his hands.

tried his best to grow straight

but just couldn’t. is where

my brother first kissed

his girlfriend. is where I wrote

my first love letter. is a home

to small furry things. shelters

the homeless man on sunny days.

watches what we do for each other.

Our tree, is us.

Brilliant Marie. This is a lovely piece of writing and it is magical the way that you bring the tree to life and give it personality. There are lots of lovely images - 'holds the moon in his hands'.
Well done - you must have a very positive outlook on life.
All the best,
Alan
