Valentine's Day is normally filled with thoughts of love, Cupid, flowers, and candy, but not for Lola Luna. Read this short story thriller that might just have you on the edge of your seat.

"
It was Valentine’s Day, 2009.  Lola Luna depressed herself when she thought of being alone that day.  She saw all the couples and wondered why no one would ever like her.  It was close to dusk; she thought she would take an evening stroll hoping to get everything off her mind.  She had no idea where she would head to when she left her house.  Lola told no one what she was doing; if something were to happen to her, no one would know where she was.  As soon as she stepped out of the door, she could tell something wasn’t right, but she didn’t care; she left anyway because she needed the exercise.
Lola had never been the prettiest or skinniest, neither the tallest.  She was rather obese and very short; she was only four feet tall.  No one was attracted to her; they never had been, and she thought they never would be.  You never knew what mood you would find her in; one minute she was as nice as she could be; the next, she would bite your head off for getting in her way.
Lola lived on the foothills of a fairly small mountain--Laken Summit.  She decided to journey to the peak and look out over the town.  Just a few minutes after leaving her cozy home, she had the feeling someone was following her.  She heard faint sounds coming from behind her, but nothing should be making noise.  It kept getting louder and louder.  Then she heard him yell, “Hang on!”  She started to jog, but she wasn’t very fast.  He yelled again, “I have something to tell you!”
As Dushon was running to catch up with her, he thought, I hate Valentine’s Day; all the lovey-dovey couples, wasted money, the publicity, and just everything about it.  But this was going to be the best Valentine’s Day of his life; he was sure of it.
Lola heard the footsteps getting louder behind her.  But since she was corpulent and short, she couldn’t get away. He caught up with her and grabbed her arm.  Lola knew she wouldn’t be able to break free of his grip; she screamed bloody murder, but no one could hear her.  Just as she started to cry, he said it was going to be okay, and he just wanted to talk to the pretty little lady he saw walking in front of him.  It was difficult for Lola to catch her breath, but when she did, she said, “You frightened me!  Why would you follow me and scare me like that!  How could you?!  Who do you think you are?”
“Dushon Kay.  I saw you and thought you were the most beautiful woman my eyes have ever seen.  I just had to talk to you!” Dushon answered.
Lola never thought someone would consider her the most beautiful thing his or her eyes had ever seen, but Dushon did.  She thought for a little bit about what she should say to that.  Just as she was about to answer, he spoke again, “Do you have any plans for tonight?  If not, I’d love for you to join me for a stroll.  I have a cabin close to the peak of the mountain; we could go watch a movie.  That is, if you want to.”
Lola was speechless; she never thought this would happen, not even in a million years.  “Uh, sure,” Lola was nervous as she answered, “I’d love that!”  She had never been the smartest one in her family or her school.  She didn’t care that she didn’t know this man or that he had just scared her to death; she wasn’t able to sense any danger.
“Great!” Dushon had thrown off his misanthropic ways to trick Lola, and it worked.  He didn’t really like her; he thought she was as fat as a cow.
Together they walked up Laken Summit.  As they did, they got to know each other.  “So you really think I’m beautiful?” Lola asked.
“Yes,” Dushon laughed in his head as he told this lie, “you really are.”
“Wow, I never thought this would happen!  You’re, uh, not so bad yourself,” she said shyly.
Dushon couldn’t believe he could trick her so easily.  It was easy, a piece of cake.  But they weren’t to his cabin yet, he had to keep playing along.  “Why thank you, uhh, what’s your name? I forgot to ask,” Dushon honestly asked.
    “My name is Lola Luna.”
“What a lovely name you have!” Dushon replied.  He couldn’t keep this up much longer; anticipation built up inside of him as they neared the cabin.  Lola didn’t notice, but Dushon sped up until they finally reached the door.
They walked in slowly, Lola going first.  The first thing she saw was a 42” flat-screen TV; then, a red, luxurious couch.  She thought to herself, “man he must be rich AND he likes me, what a great day!”  It was then, right as she was about to tell him how nice his place was, that she heard the door lock behind her.  Lola wondered what was going on; she thought they were just there to watch a movie.  But it turns out, Dushon had other plans.
He screamed at her to sit on the couch.  But Lola refused; it must have been her bipolar ways shining through because at that moment, she screamed right back at him, “I trusted you!  What are you trying to do?!  I thought we were just going to watch a movie!  What were your REAL plans, Dushon?”
“Well, Lola, to tell you the truth, I tricked you into coming up to my cabin with me, so I could kill you.”
Lola screamed as loud as she possibly could, even though it was doubtful that anyone would hear her.  Dushon leapt at her, but she saw it coming and barely got out of the way.  He fell to the ground with a lot of force, creating a loud thump.  Lola ran for the door while he was still trying to get up.  “Dang it!”  She thought; she couldn’t get the lock undone.  She was still fiddling with it, screaming the whole time, when he put his arm around her neck and tried to strangle her.  She may have been obese and small, but she was strong.  He didn’t expect her to put up such a fight.  Lola was kicking and punching Dushon as hard as she could.  All that kicking finally paid off; she got him in the sweet spot.  He fell to the ground, and she went for the door again.  She had been thinking about how to get it open at the same time she was trying to get out of Dushon’s arms; she was pretty sure she had it figured out this time.  She got it!  Lola threw the door open just as he was getting up, it hit him right in the face.  She thought this was great because it gave her more time to run.  But Dushon was even more mad now, he yelled to her, “You’re never going to get away alive!  You can try to run, but you’re so fat, you won’t get very far!”
Lola knew he would wish he had never said that; he was going to pay.  She screamed back, “You only wish you could catch up to me!  I may be fat, but I’m not afraid of you!”  That was a lie; Lola was scared out of her wits of this Dushon Kay.  She kept screaming with the hopes someone would finally hear her.
Dushon started to wonder why no girl would ever like him, but he couldn’t figure it out.  He couldn’t even get this corpulent woman to like him.  He wanted someone to like, but felt he’d never find the right girl.  None of the women liked his cocky attitude, or him being a jerk to everyone he came into contact with, but he was very cute with his big muscles.  Dushon seemed to be misanthropic.  He started to think that maybe it was time for him to start being nice; maybe he should stop chasing Lola and trying to kill her.  Just maybe this wasn’t how he wanted to be.  Wait, what was he thinking?  This was his life, attracting girls, then killing them.  He was born to do the work of the devil.  Dushon ran faster and wondered why he could ever question his profession, murdering innocent people.  He was gaining on her; she looked behind her and noticed this.  He shouted at her, “Ha!  I told you I would catch you!  And look, I almost have!”  He finished with an evil laugh.
Lola knew this was true; she had to think of something to get farther ahead.  But what?  Then, it came to her, the most brilliant idea she had ever had.  She saw a garbage bin up ahead of her; she only hoped it would be empty to save her time.  The maintenance crew that took care of the mountain had left a trash can when they were cleaning up that night.  She thanked God when she got to it and it was empty.  She climbed in, and tipped it over; she then started rolling down the mountain.  Lola knew she would be going much faster this way; Dushon would have a very hard time catching her.  “What was that?” Lola wondered.  She had ran into a small cliff and fallen to the ground below.  It was about an eight foot drop.  Lola was lucky enough to have her fall cushioned by another person.  She knocked the person out because she was so obese.  She wondered if this person would have a cell phone on them.  Lola caught another lucky break when she found a cell phone in one of the front pockets.  She dialed 9-1-1, but the person started to get up, so she hesitated.  It was too dark by now to tell whom it was.  She screamed bloody murder when the person said, “Hello, Lola.  We meet again.  You thought you could outsmart me, didn’t you?”  It was Dushon.  He had found a shortcut and knew she would be rolling off that cliff; he could tell that she was headed straight for it.  Dushon knew this mountain well.  But he didn’t know she had his cell phone.  Lola was able to hit ‘Send’ really quick.  When the dispatcher picked up, Lola yelled, “Laken Summit!  A killer is chasing me.  His name is Dushon Kay.  Please help me!!”
The dispatcher started to answer, “We’ll send help right away Ma’am.  Please..”  But Dushon stole the phone from her, threw it on the ground, and smashed it into pieces.  Lola knew she had to be the luckiest woman on earth to have gotten that call off; help was on the way.
But Dushon was still there.  Lola thought quickly and ran while Dushon was busy breaking his phone.  They were almost to town; she knew that because she could see the streetlights.  She ran as fast as she had ever run before; it seemed as though she was a cheetah.  This time, she knew she could make it.  She had faith in herself that she could outrun him even though she wasn’t very fast.  Lola was right; the adrenaline finally kicked in, and she made it to town.  She didn’t know where to go from there, but she decided the police station was the best place to go.  She threw the door open, and tried to tell the officer what had happened.  She couldn’t catch her breath, but at least she was safe now.  She finally muttered the words, “Dushon Kay. gasp  He was chasing me.  He said gasp he was going to kill me.  He was gasp right behind me.  Catch him, please!”
The officer that she talked to took his gun out of its holster and ran outside.  Sure enough, Dushon was trying to run out of town.  He got close enough to see that she ran into the police station.  Now, he was running for his life.  The officer aimed his gun at Dushon and shot.  Dushon fell to the ground; the officer’s shot had gotten him right in the heart.  The officer rushed to Dushon to put him in handcuffs, but Dushon no longer had a pulse; the shot had killed him.
The ambulance went to where all the action was.  They rushed Dushon to the hospital, but it was of no use.  Lola watched as the ambulance drove off.  She had learned so much from this experience.  You can’t trust someone you just meet, and you should always tell someone where you’re going.  Lola had gotten lucky"this time.
