The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

A Poem by Richard Dotson, Jr.

It's been a while since we had a heart to heart talk.
I love everything about you from your pretty eyes to the sexy way you walk.
I admit that we haven't expressed our deepest thoughts enough.
You've been there, especially when times got a little rough.
Even when you become one's bride, I will still care for you.
I know it may seem like I rule with an iron fist.....
That's not the case. I'm actually keeping a firm grip on those who will be truly missed.
I'd battle for you until the ends of the earth.
You're the happiest thing to happen to me since my niece's birth.
I know we're not a couple, but I'm glad we're together.
I'll be there to comfort you when you're crying and to hold you in stormy weather.
I know I'd be safe from danger in the safety of your arms.
I don't know what attracted me to you first: the curvaceous exterior or your pretty girl charms.
You were there for me, whether it was a cheeky kiss or a heartfelt hug.
You're compressed with a mother's love, twisted with a little thug.
As I sit, overlooking the Atlantic, three weeks later....... and it still makes no sense, but I guess it will one day.
We all learn from our mistakes, so I guess this is my lesson. It pains me to know that you were my crown jewel.....the one that got away.
