Unresolved Grievances

Unresolved Grievances

A Chapter by Hasventhran Baskaran

The Prime Minister's office was quiet, the atmosphere thick with tension, as he studied Amelia across his desk. Now 62, she was a formidable figure in Westbrook's political landscape. Having been held hostage by communist guerrillas in the early 90s, she had parlayed that traumatic experience into a skyrocketing political career. Amelia was not just any advisor; she was the ex-wife of the recently deceased Dashanan, and her storied history made her an indispensable asset in the unfolding crisis.

Back in the early 1990s, Amelia had been a luminary on the political horizon, bright with promise. She had Dashanan, her then-husband, at her side, poised to dominate the political scene. However, her relentless ambition often eclipsed her personal life, including her relationship with Dashanan. When she was abducted during an overseas political mission, Dashanan had been shattered. He had drained his resources - financial, emotional, and political - in a desperate quest to secure her freedom. During her years of captivity, Amelia did communicate sporadically with Dashanan, urging him to persist in efforts for her release. However, her communications betrayed that her foremost concern was her own political future.

Years later, Amelia was liberated. She was ecstatic but returned home to discover that Dashanan, in his crusade to free her, had emptied his coffers. Moreover, emotionally, they were like two diverging rivers. While in captivity, she had been subjected to years of physical and emotional trauma. She emerged a hardened version of herself, with an amplified hunger for political clout. Dashanan, despite his commitment to her cause, was now a liability with his persistently left-leaning ideologies. Amelia, seeking someone better aligned with her ambitions and newly-acquired tastes, abandoned Dashanan for a wealthy minister from the reigning party.

Now, in the Prime Minister's office, her expression was an unreadable mask of icy calculation. "I have no intention of participating in his funeral or any ceremonial theatrics surrounding him," she declared unequivocally. The Prime Minister sighed, visibly frustrated. "Amelia, he was a public figure. We can't control how the public chooses to memorialize him."

"I am indifferent to public sentiment," Amelia retorted sharply. "In my eyes, Dashanan was a liability to the nation. I won't be party to lionizing him."

The Prime Minister tightened his jaw, collecting himself. "Amelia, your personal grievances with Dashanan aren't why you're here. The country is on the cusp of crisis. We're missing a crucial document. The Defense Minister assures me they're leaving no stone unturned, but we need a contingency for the worst."

For the first time, Amelia's steely gaze softened just a fraction. "Alright, I’ll assist in that matter," she agreed, "but don't expect me to be present at anything related to Dashanan's posthumous affairs."

"Fair enough," nodded the Prime Minister, a line of worry still etched on his face. "Finding that document is paramount."

Amelia left the office, her departure leaving the Prime Minister in a state of anxious contemplation. Amelia was an enigma, a powerful force imbued with a vitriolic disdain for Dashanan. He knew he needed her expertise, yet her motivations were a maze of complexity. The nation was teetering on the edge, and the missing document was just the tip of a much larger, more perilous iceberg.

As Amelia settled into her car, her mind briefly revisited her past - her capture, her release, and her escape from the burdensome relationship with Dashanan. But as she steered her car through the gates of her opulent mansion, she felt a surge of triumphant excitement. Here was an opportunity to demonstrate her mettle, to rise above the label of being merely Dashanan’s ex-wife or a victim of kidnapping. She was prepared to recover the lost document, even if it meant cooperating with the man she'd once been so desperate to leave. As she entered her home, her sense of purpose was crystalline. She was a woman of great resources and intellect, and she was ready to deploy both in the face of the challenges that lay ahead. She had surmounted incredible obstacles before; now she was more ready than ever for whatever lay on the horizon.
