Breaking the Chains of Oppression

Breaking the Chains of Oppression

A Chapter by Hasventhran Baskaran

As Nadya settled into her temporary sanctuary, her heart still pounded from the adrenaline of recent events. She took a steadying breath and carefully opened Dashanan's diary. Nadya had left her old life behind in search of something more meaningful, and she felt an unexpected kinship as she delved into Dashanan's words. But as she read on, it became clear that his path had not been simple. He'd fought his way up, struggling for survival, and something hinted at a greater story yet to unfold. Nadya's eyes eagerly devoured page after page, uncovering the complex tapestry of Dashanan's life.

Dear Diary,

It's surreal to think it's been five years since you were gifted to me on my 15th birthday. Dad, who is no longer with me, had given you to me in a moment that shifted the course of my life. When I unwrapped you, I was puzzled. Keeping a diary was never on my radar. Dad looked serious, even solemn, as he handed you over.

"I've never written in a diary before," I told him, confused. He replied, softly, "This diary will be a confidant in your life's journey. It will harbor your secrets, your ambitions, and it will never pass judgment." It was uncharacteristically poetic of him, a man usually more at home with numbers and facts than with sentiments.

Dad opened you to the first page and penned something that has served as a beacon for me ever since: "Education is our escape from the cycle of oppression." At fifteen, I didn’t quite grasp the weight of that sentence. But as I came to witness the hardships endured by my community, those words became my mantra.

My heritage places me among a people who have faced systemic disenfranchisement for generations. But Dad always said that education could be our salvation. He urged that knowledge could help us break free from our shackles. I took that to heart, immersing myself in academics, determined to defy the narrative others had written for us.

Yet, I quickly realized that every step upwards would be a battle. The more I achieved, the more walls I ran into - walls made of prejudice and expectations. Once, I was passed over for a scholarship, not for lack of merit but because of who I was - or rather, who I was not, according to societal norms. It was crushing, but Dad’s words rang in my ears: "Education is our escape from the cycle of oppression." I couldn't afford to let disappointment turn into despair. So, I soldiered on, eventually securing a scholarship even more prestigious than the one I'd lost.

But personal achievement was never the endgame. The plight of my community remained in my sights. I began to volunteer, tutoring children in my neighborhood, spearheading cultural events - showing that we were not defined by our struggles but elevated by our resilience.

You, dear diary, have been my silent ally through all this. You've kept my secrets, absorbed my fears, and celebrated my hopes. My father's words on your first page are a recurring reminder that this journey is larger than myself; it is the collective ascent of a people burdened for far too long.

In a world that often labels and segregates us by our background, education stands as the universal leveller. It empowers us to cut through the veils of prejudice, equipping us to forge a better future, not just for ourselves but for our communities. So, as long as ink flows from my pen, I will continue writing in you. I will persist in leveraging my education for the upliftment of my community and to shatter the crippling molds society would have us fit into.

Thank you for being my unwavering companion on this voyage.

Sincerely,
Dashanan

Nadya closed the diary slowly, touched and inspired. Dashanan's story, his struggles, and triumphs resonated deeply with her. She felt fortified, ready to face the challenges that lay ahead, not just for herself, but for the larger good. The personal had become political, and in that, she found an unexpected strength.
