Tapped for Sorrow

A Chapter by Hasventhran Baskaran

PRESENT DAY

“Hugo, you are not the good man as you always thought you were. If you were really a good person, you would not have let your Aditi to rot in the coffin with your child. What kind of husband are you? You were not aware of your wife’s pregnancy also. You deserve this. Now, stay out of my business. I know you have nothing to lose now. Yet, I am warning you for the second time. Just don’t cross paths with me. Make this your last time and move on with your life” the unknown voice went blank after threatening Hugo. The thought of letting his pregnant wife to die, sent a chill through his spine. “How could I be so careless not knowing that she is pregnant? She was killed because of me. I’m solely responsible for this. This wouldn’t have happened if I listened to him”, Hugo broke into tears.

“Pattern Breaking Serial Murderer : The fifth and latest victim is from Port Dickson, 40 minutes away from the murderer’s killzone. This is the first time the murderer has stepped out from the city boundary. The 28-year-old victim is believed to be kidnapped from her home before being murdered. Unlike other victims, the latest victim’s body has not been found yet. Is there any possibility of more murders happening in a larger scale? What are the police department is doing to ensure the public’s safety?”, a breaking news was playing on the TV.

His wife was the fifth victim linked to the serial murders happening in Klang Valley. The police have been trying to debunk the mystery behind the case for the past 5 months. Being a genuinely good man have not always rewarded Hugo. He had faced troubles many times for being innocent and staying rigid to the rules. The same voice he heard minutes before his wife die, spoke to him again, after 26 days. This time he heard a good news that quickly became a tragic one in split seconds. Pregnancy is a sweet news. But, how about letting someone pregnant to die? Will you be able to carry the grief to your grave?

Hugo was in extreme emotions. His wife was the only family he had. They were living happily after moving away from parents due to the backlash received for inter-religion marriage from both . Hugo was working as a technology consultant at a private firm. Aditi was a freelance developer . Their salaries together were more than enough for their monthly expenses. They had a moderate life, yet they were satisfied it. Hugo’s peaceful life hit the rock bottom in that one dreadful day. “I’m sorry, Aditi. I lost you due to my mistakes. Forgive me dear. I started this with a good intention and lost all I had. I must not give up now. I have to do this for YOU and for the good of the world”, he wiped his tears and took a piece of paper and a pen. He quickly scribbled something on the paper. Hugo cleared his throat and looked into the eyes of the person sitting in front him, “I cracked it, sergeant. We are not looking at the DEVIL. It is something else…”
