Ghazal... Darr-e-janaan

Ghazal... Darr-e-janaan

A Poem by Khaaki

Sober he arrives and dances at your doorstep,

Every heart, wounded, dances at your doorstep.

Soothing greets all who enter your tavern, but

Oh this awe! I take no chances at your doorstep.

Enter I can’t, as rivals throng your gathering, but

Steal, can I, a few glances at your doorstep?

I rehearse my say, Oh! I hold my heart firm, but

In blinks swayed my stances, all at your doorstep.

Envy, ecstasy, hope, despair, desire and what not,

Every thought your lover romances at your doorstep.

What does love promise, but to lose one’s senses!

I scatter all, to gather those nuances at your doorstep.

O’ Khaaki, hope not to remember these flights of fancy,

It was, once again, a night of trances at your doorstep…
