Mama Always Said

Mama Always Said

A Poem by Phantasmagoric Perceptions
"

Real Life

"

My mama always used to say,
"Baby, don't you ever rely on a man.
It's funny cause they can love you,
But they'll up and leave you as soon as they can."

I took her advice, and hid it way down deep.
I looked at each man with contempt.
I swore I'd never let them hurt me.
A hurt like that, you just cain't forget.

I met many a man as my life went on,
And I fell in love a few times.
But when things were gettin' tough,
I just remembered that look in my mama's eyes.

She'd say, "Baby girl, a man is only just a man,
And a woman cain't live on him alone.
You gotta find a way outta here.
Smart girl, you can make it on your own."

She said to me, "Put the sun in front, and home behind.
You're gonna be big someday, that's true.
Your mama didn't raise no fool."
