Bangon (Get Up)A Story by hardluckbabyThe tsunami in Japan. The wrecked building in New Zealand. The protests in Libya. The crisis in Saudi Arabia. Could these be signs of the 2012 predictions coming to life? And what would you do if you knew the world is ending? Party hard, like what singer Jay Sean claims he would do? Run for your life, like what John Cusack did in the movie 2012? Or pray for safety, like what any normal person with religion would? We don't really know, do we, so let's just leave it for when that time comes.
These tragedies are tests for humankind. And yes, it is heartwarming to see people helping those who lost their homes or got injured because of these disasters. But the question is, what is the real motive or reason for this giving of help? The government sends support because they are obligated to. Organizations hand donations so they will get some sort of a recognition. Rarely you will find people who help because they really want to - and I salute them.
But ok, people help people that have been struck by disaster. But what if disaster hits all of us?
A TV ad for a coffee asks, "Para kanino ka bumabangon? (For whom do you get up in the morning?)" then shows scenes of seemingly good people getting up in the morning for others. Is there any truth to this? Admit it - everyone gets up because they have to earn a living. Everyone is excited to face the new day and discover what's in store for them. Everyone gets up for themselves.
Because everyone fights for their own survival.
Just look at some games you play. These are like social experiments about what man has to and will do just to win or be alive: kill the others. All our life we are surrounded by a sense of competition - with siblings, with peers, at school, or at work. In order to be on top, you have to get ahead of all the others. In order to win, someone else has to lose. This is our mentality.
And if we continue to think like that, mankind will soon perish - because no one is willing to sacrifice a little for everyone else. Because we all want the whole of the cake, and not be contented with just a piece of it so everyone can have a bite. And I'm guessing we will never learn. © 2011 hardluckbabyAuthor's Note
