An Impression of Loneliness

An Impression of Loneliness

A Poem by Isaac Canton

Imagine a deep pool, blue and scented like frost,
Sitting in a crook of a small, lonely brook,
Under the shade of a bear and barren oak.
The sunlight does not touch this place,
And so the water gathers the dusk at its own pace,
Collecting the dark like a dam, the dark,
Collecting the dark like a dam.

Imagine how the gentle winds ache the surface
With ripples and smiles,
yet still gives no purpose
To the layer of ice that coats its tired eyes.

The place seems to have a memory of its own,
Remembering the flood that shook its home,
And rains that made the flowers flee,
And drowned the grass and killed the birds and bees.
And so the place remains quiet, cold and empty,
Collecting the dark like a dam, the dark,
Collecting the dark like a dam.
