Interesting how an item of clothing or footwear can acquire such a personal meaning that putting it to one side is like letting go part of your personality. To some extent we become what we wear! I think this short poem captures this idea perfectly. I like the way the stress falls on the final 'you' and given an added emphasis by rhyming with the earlier 'shoe'. The speaker may now regard herself as an adult, but the certainty and the sense of security within herself, with the self which 'traversed the tarmac with such grace' no longer exists.

I love the way you have used the rollerskates as a symbol of little girl things! They do grown up and move on to heels and apartments and families of their own. Perhaps, someday another little girl will roll around in them.
