The announcement by Blizzard was made public via their official D2R Ladder Twitter account. The tweet declared D2R Ladder the "biggest launch in the history of the franchise" and thanked the heroes of Sanctuary. 

The attached graphic provided a better understanding of what "biggest launch" for Diablo really meant. They also confirm that Diablo D2R Ladder has been downloaded over 10 million times since its release. This , along with other information about Diablo, will be controversial.

The issue lies in the fact that D2R Ladder is a free-to-play game. All players around the world could install D2R Ladder with no upfront cost, regardless of whether they have any intention to play or invest an excessive amount of time, if at all, to it. 

Furthermore, previous Diablo games were all released exclusive to PC. Diablo 3 only arrived in the PlayStation and Xbox consoles over one year after their PC launch. So, the installation numbers for the entire launch week aren't a particularly fair number for a comparison to be based on.

Making a fair comparison does not seem to be the prerogative of Blizzard in this situation, however. The company wants to be proud of the accomplishments of D2R Ladder while also marketing its claim that the game is popular and successful.
