Volunteering is great.A Story by Hannah potthastI volunteered to help spread awareness of animal abuse and to help.Animal abuse is one thing that is known about but not always noticed. Causes vary along with the effects of abuse but do people really know what they are? Neglecting is just as bad as actually abusing an animal. Some forms of abuse are experimentation and how they are treated in zoos. There are reasons people believe animal abuse is okay, but none of them make it okay. Effects can be disorders in the animals; mentally and physically and the animal just acting completely different. This all makes me very upset, for I believe animals are living creatures who deserve love just like humans. So I decided to try to help animals in some way. I decided to volunteer. The first step to volunteering was choosing a place. With the help of my mentor, I received a volunteer opportunity with HALO, an animal welfare organization that is known to take care of their animals. They are a No Kill Facility, which I love. There are many opportunities there but I helped clean the kennels outside for my first time. First, with a partner, we made sure the animals went to the outside viewing before cleaning the inside kennel. After that I checked the dogs beds and made sure no animals were hiding and checked their blankets to see if they needed to be cleaned. I also dumped out the water bowls so they could be cleaned. Then I started cleaning my section of kennels with excel, which is a animal-safe cleaning supply that works like bleach. After that I went through all the kennels with water to make sure all the excel was cleaned out. I filled up the water bowls also while doing this. Next, I went back through and let all the dogs back in. By doing this, everything was prepped to begin cleaning their outside kennels. I went through the same procedure outside except there were no water bowls or beds. My partner cleaned up the feces in the outside kennels then I went through the spraying routine. Once all of the cleaning was finished, the best part finally came. I got the chance to play with any of the dogs I wanted. With one of them, I took them out to the little grass area to play with it and walk around. All the hard work I did was so worth this. The dogs would get so happy when you would play with them and that made me overjoyed. I would definitely volunteer again and I am planning to do so in the near future. This was not hard to do. Which means it is not hard to help. Volunteering is a rewarding experience everyone should advantage of, in my opinion. Either with homeless shelters, food banks, delivering food to elderly, working in a hospital, crisis support, disaster relief, helping building houses, and of course with animals. You can do anything to help with anyone. I just value animals a ton and I wanted to help. In the case of animals, you can also help by donating, protesting, avoiding animal tested products, doing research, taking place in fundraisers, and spreading awareness. You could even become a vegan or vegetarian to help. Getting animals help that have been abused and taking them in to homes is a huge help too. You can even foster animals for a little bit if you cannot keep them forever. There are so many ways to help. Find your way. © 2014 Hannah potthastAuthor's Note
