Lady of Endings

Lady of Endings

A Poem by Hannah Estar
"

A few thoughts on immortality

"

Fair Lady of Endings, encircle me.
Fill me with one last breath,
for anguish only awaits me here,
an eternal road towards death.

All lives and loves begin and end;
only yours endures.
Yet, my hand you will not take
though I’m reaching for yours.

Turn away as a bewitching temptress
turns away from love.
Leave me here to envy the moon
and all the stars above.

Your smile you hide from me,
a mystery in shroud,
a dark beauty so enticing
vanishing in the crowd.

My mind cannot remember
all that I have seen,
and I walk as if a shadow
in some other poor man’s dream.

The Fountain of Youth I sought
a river flowing with life,
but such a quest is as foolish
as swift silence with a knife.

Would I had given my life
for a happier time since past,
but all the change I make
will never truly last.

I outlive love and friendship.
I outlive death and war.
I outlive times and ages,
my soul crying out ‘No more!’

Trapped in a shell of flesh and bone,
my spirit awaits release,
both body and mind ensnared
in a world that will never cease.

Author's Note

Hannah Estar
Someone mentioned that "towards death" did not make sense because he is living forever, and I clarify here "an eternal road towards death" is a road towards a destination he will never arrive at, hence eternal.

This was well done, with a rhyme scheme that works nicely. The perspective of immortality was interestingly related, with weariness and bone-deep sadness all that remains. Wonderfully written...
