the shadow

the shadow

A Poem by hannahct

your tongue plays upon my mouth, so soft and delicate,

as familiar fragrance swims sweetly through the air.

i merely love you, and at the same time i hate

the way you torment my soul.

you're the mirage on every horizon, laughter in brooks,

i turn to see if you're beside me... a specter? a silhouette?

not today will i see you dancing in the trees.

your hands are so calloused, yet every caress so tender...

even your voice is rough with years of wear.

how then can you manage to whisper

so softly, the words i beg you to say?

you inspire me, but where can you be?

in dream? in play? in a lover's smile?

how i wait for you to reappear.

in shadowed dream can i only see

the very reason i have hope at day's end.
