A Story by Hannah Langlinais

I've recently been told something that made me think really hard about my life and my generation. I have been told that our generation sucks, and it's true. Our generation really does suck. In my opinion, the reason this generation sucks so much is because we worry about ourselves too much. We're so selfish and we only care about our own feelings. A majority of us really don't care what we say and we don't care if we're hurting another person's feelings. A majority of us are hypocrites and low-life's teens. People make us feel so insecure. We try to fit in by 'cursing' and having things people who are less fortunate do not have. We try and make people feel bad about themselves just so it can make us feel better about ourselves. We fight, curse, yell, scream, 'tell off', and drag each other down. We think we are making this society better, but honestly we aren't. We stay on our electronics, on social media, either fighting with someone or trying to look cool for others. We use 'photoshop' and other apps to warp ourselves to make it seem like we're a whole different person on social media than we are in real life. We spend our time 'talking' to boys and girls through text message, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter..etc. Whatever it may be, we don't communicate in person. Most of us these days cannot look each other in the eyes and say what they feel because it may seem 'awkward' or 'untrue.' We can't express our feelings through verbal contact because we don't have 'emojis' or 'icons' to add that type of effect. We act sketchy and we say things on social media we may not say in person because you may be scared. For example, some people say they will 'beat' you, or 'fight you' the next time the see you. But only because they may be trying to show off in front of their friends or they're trying to build themselves up so they can feel 'bad' for a short period of time. But in reality, when you see that person you're supposedly going to 'beat up' or 'fight' in person, you run away and hide. No one is true to what they say these days and it plays a major role in why we cannot be ourselves and why we cannot say something without having someone bringing you down. It's hard for a majority of us to trust, also because, no one is true to what they say. You can tell you're family, girlfriend, boyfriend, friend, and even your best friend one thing, but you don't really have to mean it. You could be faking to lead that person on. Or you may even could be just be a sick human and want to hurt someone because you think it's funny or fun. In my opinion, what this generation should do is put down the phones, go to a friends house, talk and ACTUALLY HAVE CONVERSATION, and just get to know each other without having the Internet get in the way. This is our only chance at life. Our ONE chance to make the best out of this life. We need to communicate and meet new people. We shouldn't be afraid to be ourselves and we shouldn't be afraid to say things. This is life and you need to live it in the real world, and NOT on social media. You'll be surprised what may happen. Learn to love yourself and love your phone a little less. The outcome you may receive will definitely make your heart beat a little faster and your eyes open a little wider. This is life. God made you to explore and love. Don't be afraid to love. Don't be afraid to tell someone how you feel. Don't be afraid to try new things. You're not really living if you're living in fear. And those, my friend, are words to live by.
