Problems With Legal Medical Marijuana in San Diego

Medical marijuana has always been a very controversial topic, and even when it was finally decided that it would become legal for its sale to occur in San Diego, there have been more problems. The creation of the very first medical marijuana dispensary in San Diego has been fraught with problems as community leaders have made a stand against those illegal marijuana dispensaries that can be found all over the region.

However, it has become more complicated than that. Many are now stating that no legal medical marijuana dispensaries should be opened until absolutely all of the illegal ones have been shut down, which would certainly be a complicated practical issue. However, speaking out on the issue was Bruce Brown: “I can't support any of these new dispensaries while we have illegal dispensaries in our community. We've got anywhere between five and ten in our community right now, and the city doesn't have the resources to close them. We're just going to let those stand and approve four more?”

 

Neighborhood leaders met, and considered the four applications that they had received for the creation of legal medical marijuana dispensaries, and at one point there was serious discussion that supported rejecting all four applications. However, after a long debate they decided to give two applicants their approval �" conditional on the closure of all the illegal dispensaries that are in the area. They consider this to be a stand against illegal practices, and a way to be responsible for the community that they represent.

 

Technically these community leaders only provide an advisory role, but they have such a strong influence in the San Diego area that they could change the opinion of the San Diego Planning Commission. However, officials have found it more and more difficult to close the illegal shops, as many do not even know how many there are.
