Forget Triclosan And Make Your Own Toothpaste

There are lots of toothpaste recipes on the Internet. Most of them work just fine. And most of them stem from a desire to make your own toothpaste that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals like triclosan, fluoride and SLS. Recent news about triclosan in Colgate Total toothpaste and studies that link this chemical to cancer and developmental problems have cause real concern in households that never though much about their toothpaste.

There are other antibacterial agents -- like tea tree oil, for example -- that are safer than triclosan and just as effective.

Here’s one way to make toothpaste that’s inexpensive, easy to prepare and don’t have anything you don’t want in your mouth: Start by slightly warming a couple teaspoons of coconut oil. Then, add in a few natural ingredients. These include a couple teaspoons of baking soda, a tablespoon or so of calcium powder (made from ground up calcium tablets, if you like) and also some tea tree oil and rosemary oil. Just make sure all the products you use are 100 percent pure and natural.

Simply make up the paste and keep in jar until you need it. The oils can be very potent, so don’t use more than a few drops. If you aren’t familiar with rosemary oil, you’ll like it because it gets rid of bad breath and kills many kinds of germs. It’s also useful in promoting health gums, so that’s a nice bonus. Calcium powder can help remineralize teeth in some cases.

Used every morning, this is just as effective as a chemical-containing commercial product. Plus, it tastes great and leaves your teeth feeling good. What more could you want?

Life is about making smart choices, and it isn’t smart to put harsh, toxic and potentially cancer-causing chemicals in your mouth. It just isn’t. So forget about store-bought toothpaste and its triclosan, SLS and fluoride -- and make your own safe and effective paste that you and your family will enjoy using every day.
