Hope

Hope

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I hope you're enjoying

your first Christmas in heaven.

That there's all your favorite foods,

and that you actually like the coleslaw.

I hope that you save me a seat,

even if it sits empty for the next sixty years.

I hope that there's a tree.

That it's decorated with pretty lights.

That if you look close enough into the ornaments

in their golden reflection you can see me.

Like a mirror that shows you all the memories.

I hope you know I'd give up my presents

For all the Christmases of the rest of my life.

If it somehow meant I could even just call you.

Just hear you say you love me one last time.

Because I know you hear me say it every night.

I hope there are still presents

for you to unwrap.

I hope you know all I really wanted this year

was for you to be here.

So save me a seat at your table in heaven,

because someday years from now,

we will be celebrating together again.
