Broken

Broken

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

She's too young to understand
Why her daddy left
And now all of the sudden
A new woman says she's mommy

On weekends she lives in an apartment
She's too young to remember any other way
But she talks to kids at school
And learns her family's not the same

It's the first time she understands
She comes from a home that's broken
It's the first time she wonders
If she's broken too

She wishes they were together
More than just one night a year
But mommy has a new boyfriend
And daddy has a new wife

She's old enough now to understand
She knows they both love her
And she gets two of everything
But thinks one would have been enough

Because now she understands
She comes from a home that's broken
And for not the first time she wonders
If she's broken too

beautifully poignant words, from the perspective of the one who matters most, but doesn't have a voice, the child.
We only want what is best, but never ask the child. A child's mind is fragile and can conjure images of fault and blame and worry quietly, because grown ups don't understand.
Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed reading.
