We'll Like It There

We'll Like It There

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

I wish I could give her a hug

Pull her into my arms

Let her cry on my shoulder

Until she can’t anymore

I wish I could tell her

That it’s going to get better

No pain lasts forever

No matter how strong

I wish I could fight for her

Stand up and protect her

Tell her that she still has a voice

That they can’t take away her choices

I wish I could make her see

The woman she’ll grow up to be

Let them call her whatever they want

It doesn’t change who she is

They’ll always have opinions

There will always be critics

I wish I could open her eyes

And make her understand

She doesn’t have to be

What they want her to be

She doesn’t have to conform

She should be proud of who she is

They may never get her

The memories may always haunt her

But someday she’ll be free

From that school she calls Hell

I wish I could tell her

That regardless of what they think

She’s still pretty in her own way

Someday she’ll appreciate that

I wish I could tell her

That I’m her

That I know where we're headed

And that we'll like it there
