Volcano

Volcano

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

Wouldn’t it be nice

If you could go back in time

To ten years ago

I could give myself a heads up

I’d let her know the road

Is about to get bumpy

I’d warn her about

The treachery that’s afoot

I’d tell her to run far away

And to never look back

The volcano is about to blow

And we can’t stop the lava flow

I’d say “Don’t fall for his smile

Don’t be fooled by his tricks

He’s no good for us

He’s poison in our blood”

I’d tell her to be wary

And to not trust our instincts

Because everything that we knew

Will be thrown out the window

I’d tell her that we're beautiful

And to hold onto that

Because our world’s about to shake

We'll lose ourselves in the impact

Maybe it would be better

If I could tell her how it plays out

Perhaps she could prevent us

From getting our heart ripped out

But perhaps this is how it’s meant to be

Perhaps I shouldn’t interrupt destiny

If things had turned out differently

Would I still be the same me?

If I’d never been broken

Would I still be as strong?

If I’d never fallen so deeply

Would I still know how to love?

Maybe I’d be happier in the end

But does that justify the mend?

Because this tidal wave washed me away

But I still found my way back to shore

Wouldn’t it be nice

To have the power to change the past

But perhaps there’s a reason we can’t

Maybe this was just inevitable

Because If I'd never met you
What would I write about?
And if I'd never known pain
The future would lose some of its appeal

So I'll sit back and watch
As the volcano erupts
And I won't reach out to the old me
Because this is how it should be
