If You Were Still Here

If You Were Still Here

A Poem by Haley Lynn Thomas

What if you were still here?

What if I had every Christmas to spend with you?

And every Thanksgiving to be grateful for you

What if we had all the time in the world to be together?

Is it better to have never known you

Than to have loved and lost you?

Sometimes I wonder what you’d think of me

Would you be proud of the woman I turned out to be?

What if I had even a singular memory?

Or even a photograph of you holding me?

What if you’re just like I imagined you’d be?

What if you’re not and it’s all just a false dream?

What if you were still here?

Sometimes I wonder what that would be like

Would I take you for granted?

Assume you’d always be there?

What if we had just one day to know each other?

What questions would we ask one another?

I think it would have been better to lose you

Than to feel so confused about you
