Roadside Assistance

Roadside Assistance

A Chapter by Cal
"

the highway is a part of you now

"

along the cracked and rippling

highway the heat twists around

and forms a screen, obscuring

everything past the road’s shoulders.

(where is the road’s head? i wonder.

and its limbs, gangly as they must

be.) potholes from winter

shrink and close like sated mouths

and car tires rolling steadily, perpetually

over them rumble like the earth does

but less. billboards advertising

God like flank steak at Wal-mart ($2.99

to the pound) make me think

of the hungry road- mouths closing

in disgust and pain and I wonder if God

is everywhere only because

He is a ravenous beast.
