I Had A Dream That I could Fly (Monotetra)

I Had A Dream That I could Fly (Monotetra)

A Poem by Dennis White

I had a dream that I could fly
I grew some wings but don't know why
I left the ground, aimed for the sky
I say good-bye, I say good-bye

I'm like a kite without a string
I'm free, I'm free, of this I sing
What joys will this adventure bring
This airborne thing, this airborne thing

Over the mountains, rainbows too
I see great sights, they all are new
Fly through the clouds and feel the dew
A matchless view, a matchless view

But all good things do surely end
Back to the earth I will descend
In your own dreams, just try it friend
I recommend, I recommend

Monotetra Form Notes:

The monotetra is a new poetic form developed by Michael Walker. Each stanza contains four lines in monorhyme. Each line is in tetrameter (four metrical feet) for a total of eight syllables. What makes the monotetra so powerful as a poetic form, is that the last line contains two metrical feet, repeated. It can have as few as one or two stanzas, or as many as desired.

Stanza Structure:

Line 1: 8 syllables; A1
Line 2: 8 syllables; A2
Line 3: 8 syllables; A3
Line 4: 4 syllables, repeated; A4, A4

Wow this poem flowed with an unmatched elegance. I enjoyed the rhyming scheme very much and reminded me of a nice calm poetry read. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the extended metaphor of the kite and flying in general. Thematically speaking, I found this to be more surreptitious than others, but nonetheless lucid and clear in purpose. With such simple vocabulary and interesting structure, this poem surely says a lot for many to understand! Thanks for sharing this!
