pretending not that I don't know

pretending not that I don't know

A Poem by haig ourishian

Slightly dilated pupils,

an elevated pulse,

a mere by-product of an increase in norepinephrine,

slightly increased levels of perspiration,

this is it…

this is the moment.

be it the result of an accidental glance,

a resonating conversation,

a harmonic complement caught

in a shadow puppet game

a second has gone by

a stride has locked to a rhythm

another second

this is the moment that doubt anticipated

perspiration centers around the palms,

a pair of pupils seek the middle distance,

a third second, and its over.

leading a pair of heartbeats

to diverge the perpendicular plane

After it's done.

like sonar

one heart beats to the echo of the other

and all thats left are thoughts

like what might have beens

of mistakes mistaken

or worst of all

the mistakes of precision

of orthodoxy

these mistakes play parent and child

to every hesitation

proving what never needed validation

and setting the stage for another scene

of slightly dilated pupils…
