The Almost Intoxication

The Almost Intoxication

A Story by haidyzakaria

"No, no, no” she looked over everything on the menu, knowing she could afford every single thing but getting this nagging feeling that she was being scammed in broad daylight. She flipped through the pages again and found the alcohol section and read thought the choices as if she actually could drink.

There was “chateaux something something” and “single malt” which she had no idea what it meant. . She started to imagine how each of them would look like, smell like, taste like, and feel like. She could see herself holding an overly large glass with just a little bit of dark red liquid at its bottom; it would give a subdued glow in the light as if it knew it was sinister. She would hold it with only three figures and twirl it around, daring it to make her open, happy, stupid. Then, as if she knew what she was doing, she would sniff it, and take a small sip just enough to cover her tongue for a split second. The after taste would linger in her mouth painting a carefree smile, a faint flush to her cheeks and a certain lightheadedness that she wouldn’t know exactly how to explain. She’d set the glass down and stare on, wishing that warm glow would last.

She flipped again through the too expensive menu, deciding on her favorite ice cream despite her desire.

Nice direction of thought. The moment inside the person's head as she reads a menu, all the choices in the world and how she feels about each one. this is a a good flash fiction, well captured, and freshly written. Nice work.
