First LoveA Poem by Frances Smart
I was walking to the Chow Hall
On a hot September evening
I wasn’t thinking about much
Except getting to dinner
Before they closed
(After all, it was free)
When suddenly, I saw you
Leaping out of the second story window
And I thought, surely, you were dead
But you got to your feet
And came running after me down the street
I found out later that you were crazy enough
To make your living jumping out of things
But that day
All you wanted was to ask me out
To the biggest party of the year,
I might add
You had a girl at home
The way most of the guys I knew did
But I didn’t care because
I was crazy enough to love you
And the way you made me laugh
And the things you believed in
And so I shouldn’t have been surprised
That day three years later
When I told you how
I had lost our baby
And you told me how
You had gotten married three days before
And you were so very happy
I shouldn’t have been surprised
But I was
Because I was betting on the fact
That I would win, in the end
But the things I won are not the things I was expecting
I am stronger because I loved you
Better because I knew you
And happier because I got to be with you
Thank you for being my friend.
Happy birthday, P.F.B.
