ColorsA Poem by Frances SmartAn inspiration I had on Flag DayI made a promise To God, to country, to myself-- A promise to defend you And everything you represent I took that promise seriously More seriously, probably, Than I did my wedding vows.
So off to defend you I went Leaving behind family, friends, And all that I held dear, Because of my oath of fidelity To a piece of cloth About five feet long and three feet wide, Inlaid with white stars and red stripes.
I'm not sorry I made that choice Although the price I paid was high Because the things you gave me-- Courage, resolve, and my sacred honor-- Were worth more to me than life itself And all the beauty in it © 2008 Frances SmartReviews
