UntitledA Poem by Frances SmartUpon learning of the suicide of a friend
When I first met you I hated you on sight How I wish I had known then That I hated you because I loved you I remember the night I realized How deep ran the current between us And my friend said You couldn't have slid a piece of paper Between us; we were that close As we danced together
From that night on We were inseparable Until the day our obligations-- Obligations to honor, to country, and to those To whom we had made a solemn promise Came between us
I wish I could have been there for you The man I loved with all my soul When you came to the conclusion That life was not worth living
All that are left now Are the memories Of driving with you in the moonlight, Of touching you in the dark, And of the last time I saw you Strutting towards a helicopter Your red hair glistening in the sun So confident, so assured And oh, so totally beautiful I will always see you that way And remember the breathtaking way you loved me And the joy you brought to my life
