City Lights

City Lights

A Poem by Shalini R

At 5 am, the city lights at sun's rise
From a distance look like fallen stars.
They glow like some inverted heaven.
My eternity is this place now, on earth.

This city has hands. Fingers beam out from
Streams of light from skyscraper windows. In
its grasp is a nestled collection of unspoken dreams.
Here is the sepulcher of broken dreams.

I tried to leave my dreams safe, far away
from the choking grip of the city's worn palms.
Somewhere safe in the suburbs, I supposed.

But where can you hide from this light?
Even the dark is smothered out by its release.
It's time my dreams find a new place to live.

The extreme loudness of this city's lifestyle scares out all the dreams you had. How beautiful that idea is.
The sudden change of environment often forces us to give up on the things we hold so dearly and you portrayed it incredibly well. Each and every word of the poem seems well chosen. Not a word less, not a word more. I found a perfect melody the poem and just loved it. The reader leaves the poem with a thought in mind which makes the poem so special. Good luck. Happy writing. :)
