An AtticA Chapter by Mia“Did you hear that?” she asked Kayla.CHAPTER SIX The two girls exchanged glances before walking up the stairs. The stairs creaked beneath their feet. They opened the door at the top, and this time it led to an attic. The two girls exchanged glances before opening the door and heading inside. It was an eerie old attic, filled with boxes, old photos and books. Predictably, everything was covered in a layer of dust. The two girls snooped around a bit, opening a few boxes and books, only to cough away the dust. They looked at few picture frames, but they were all either empty or the picture was in black in white and too blurry to even try to distinguish. Abby managed to make out a few words in a diary she had found, but the rest of the ink was smudged. “Look.” Kayla said, holding up a Union uniform from the Civil War. “Wow.” was all Abby could manage to say. Kayla folded up the uniform, but before putting it back in the box, she picked up something else and pulled it out. It was an oil painting of a young man coming back in the same uniform. He was surrounded by his family, a young woman at his side, and a small girl hugging him around the legs. They all had happy expressions on their faces. It was a marvelous painting, but there was no signature. Kayla wondered who had painted it. Abby, meanwhile, was flipping through old diaries, trying to find one without the smudged, splattered, and smeared ink she had seen in all the others. She found one with a lock, and near the bottom of the box she also saw an old looking key. She pulled out the key, but due to rust, there was nothing Abby could do to fit it in there. A noise from a distance made Abby jump. “Did you hear that?” she asked Kayla. Kayla shook her head, looking through more boxes. Abby’s eyes darted to a small door in the wall, in which she assumed the noise had come from. Abby crawled towards the door, and set her hand on the old fashioned handle. Wow, Abby though This house really enforces the meaning of old. She pulled open the door, and her screams could be heard a mile away. © 2010 MiaAuthor's Note
