CHAPTER FIVE

Once they were in the house, the two girls searched for any sign of cats or cat bowls, but nothing was to be found. Oddly, no cat food or note of any sort was in sight.

“Well, this is odd.” Kayla said “Maybe we should just look through the house one more time?”

Abby nodded and headed up the stairs behind Kayla.

They explored the second floor again, hoping to find something that was related to cats. Once upstairs, Abby opened a door that she hadn’t remembered seeing before. On the other side was a small hallway.

“Hey Kayla!” Abby said, not wanting to be alone “Come check this out!”

Kayla followed Abby down the hallway. They saw one door, right before the following staircase that probably led to the next floor.

“Should we open it?” Kayla whispered for an unknown reason. The house was scaring both the girls, and yet they really didn’t know why..

Abby nodded.

“Let’s do it together.”

They both set their hands on the door knob and twisted at the count of three. They stepped into the small bedroom together. It was, like the rest of the house, Victorian styled. The only electronic things were the lights and a small clock on the side table. The girls stepped out as quickly as they stepped in, as the room’s claustrophobic aura was suffocating them both. They headed up the stairs, very close together. Once they had climbed those stairs, there was nothing but two small doors, one a bare closet, and the other an empty powder room. Kayla stepped into the powder room, and wiped her finger across the counter.

“Abby,” she said, examining something on her finger “I don’t think anyone’s lived here for months.”

She showed Abby her finger, which had a thick layer of dust.

Abby gasped, without really knowing why.

“Do you think we should go up?” Abby asked her in a whisper

Kayla glanced at the next staircase that was waiting for them to climb. She glanced back and forth between the staircase and Abby, biting her lip like always.

“Yes.” she replied in a whisper.
