CHAPTER ONE

“Urgh, Kayla, can’t you wait one second?” Abby asked.

“Never heard of that. Can’t you hurry up Abby?” Kayla replied.

The two best friends were packing away for a weekend at Kayla’s new cottage. They had finished high school about a month ago now, and, as her graduation present, Kayla’s relatives had put their money together to buy her a small cottage near a lake. Abby’s graduation present from her parents had been a car, so she would be the one driving them up there. Abby was taking forever to pack her things, she had to go through everything three times to make sure she everything. Her worried attitude was driving Kayla insane.

“Okay, I’m  pretty sure I have everything.” Abby said, closing her eyes. Kayla just knew Abby was going over that list again.

“Abby, calm down.” Kayla said, reassuringly. “You have everything, I’m sure of it.”

“Kayla, it’s not like it’s just one day. We’ll be there for two weeks! What if I forgot something like-“

“Your panties? I think you remembered those, Abby. Come on, let’s go! At the rate we’re going , we won’t be there until Christmas.” Kayla said, grabbing her suitcase, bag, and purse before walking out of the bedroom and out the front door. On the way out, they were confronted by Abby’s parents.

“Have a wonderful time girls.” Mrs. Lars, Abby’s mom, said.

“Bye mom, bye dad.” Abby said, giving each of them a hug before following Kayla to the front door.

“Bye Mr. and Mrs. Lars.” Kayla said, opening the front door and stepping outside, Abby following her.

The two girls walked over to the car, loading their things into the trunk. After Kayla had shut the door, the two girls walked up to the front of the car, Abby sitting down in the driver’s seat, while Kayla sat in the passenger’s seat. They shut the doors, Abby started the car, and they sat there for the hour long drive to Kayla’s new cottage. Kayla passed the time by changing the radio station every five minutes, while Abby passed it by occasionally honking her horn and yelling at various drivers until they reached a quieter road. About fifty minutes into the drive, they entered a small neighborhood, filled with identical white houses. If you looked somewhere to the east, you would have been able to see a small lake, that was near Kayla’s cottage. Abby drove a little bit into the neighborhood and glanced down at the sheet of white paper that had Kayla’s cottage address on it. She drove a bit further before stopping in front of a white house. The house had a perfectly green lawn with a few bright, colorful flowers near the doorstep. There was a front patio, complete with a hanging chair and black shutters.

Abby pulled the car into the driveway and got out, Kayla following behind her. They opened the trunk and pulled their things out, setting them down on the black driveway. After Abby had closed the trunk of the red car, the two girls walked over to the garage, and as Kayla put the code in, it opened. They stepped into the small house. It had a small but modern kitchen, complete with a dining area that had a table with four chairs, not that there would be four of them eating. There was a living room, equipped with a television, sofa, and reclining chair. There was also a wooden bookshelf filled with new books in the back corner. They found the bathroom, and the door to the basement, which they decided to look at later, as both the girls didn’t like the dark, and didn’t enjoy basements, even if there was a light. They then walked up the winding staircase. Upstairs, they found two bedrooms, a bathroom tiled in bright pink and orange everywhere, and a small storage closet. The two girls figured out their rooms and unpacked everything. Abby’s room was all different shades of pink. Despite her actions, pink was her favorite color. Kayla had chosen the orange room, which, unsurprisingly was her favorite color. They went back downstairs and walked through the house one more time. This time, they went into the basement. It was totally furnished, carpeted, and painted. The two girls relaxed at this sight of it. It hadn’t been as…dark as they had expected. They walked back up the carpeted stairs and over to the doors that led out to the back porch. They discovered that they had a small white table for two out there, and that they could swim in the lake. It had been Kayla who had discovered that.

“Hey Abby, come check out the view I have from the porch.” She had called inside the house.

Kayla heard Abby’s footsteps as she came out to the porch.

“That’s a cute table.” Abby said, as that was the only thing she saw.

“I mean that view.” Kayla whispered, lowering her arm and pointing a finger at the pond.

“Oh, but that’s even better.” She whispered back to Kayla.

They both laughed, which caused the three boys their age to look their way. Once they had turned their heads back, they started talking amongst themselves, most likely about the two girls they had just seen on the porch. After about a minute of conversation, the resumed playing volleyball in the water.

“Oh my god Kayla, I think I forgot my swimsuit.” Abby said, running her hands through her hair nervously.

“Why, you weren’t thinking of going swimming with those boys, were you?” Kayla asked, raising her eyebrows.

“I-“

“I’m only joking, of course we are!” Kayla said, laughing at Abby’s nervousness. “And you packed at least five swimsuits, I watched you pack you know.”

“Good.” Abby said.

They both sat down at the small white table outside, and planned the decision to go swimming with the boys.

“Maybe we could invite them over afterwards and, you know, have a little party. My parents already bought food that’s waiting for us in the fridge, and my dad gave me his credit card to use for the vacation.” Kayla suggested.

Abby looked at her eyebrows raised.

“You know I do not like that idea.” Abby said immediately.

“Well, that’s what we’re doing. You want to swim with the boys, I want to party with the boys. We both get our way.”

“You want to swim with them too!” Abby exclaimed.

“Well, you want to party with them too, you’re just hiding it.” Kayla said “No more objections, Abby. This is how it’s going.”
