preface and outlineA Chapter by Samuel Ferris
In these essays i hope to lay a framework for further development and thought that may extend to the end of my life. I hope for it to be useful as a guide into the realm of multidisciplinary thinking of which i am most fond of. The disciplines i hope to include are as follows:
Music theory sociology and musicology Aesthetics psychoacoustics physics(basic) and acoustics physiology and neurology(applicable to music and cognition) motion, rhythm and cognition poetry and linguistics music poetry and art history culture myth and perception imagery, symbols, and the mind economics power structures psychology computation, statistics, and the study of dynamic systems the ideas of thermodynamics and entropy(basic and more focused on applications in philosophy and aesthetics) Let me reiterate, the focus, or idee fixe is multidisciplinary thinking it self. It is the idea of developing the ability to find motivic connections and linkages between every faculty of human experience, and using those connections to form an educated and more accurate view of the whole as well as its disparate parts. It is my belief that knowing fundamentally changes not only the physical make up of your entire body, but changes the fundamental way in which you perceive the world as well. There for, knowledge may be power, but more importantly, knowledge is peace. It is my intent then to become proficient enough to communicate and understand fully the implications of knowledge on other disciplines, by becoming proficient to a degree in fields other than my own focus. This will allow me do adequately apply these ideas in a scientific and systematic way to my own field of study which is music composition. but for now i am tired and think i will sleep.
