My Adhesive

My Adhesive

A Poem by Lisa McDougal

It has taken me many years to put myself together

I am a project that has stopped and started over several times before

I have been torn apart and rip into pieces, almost to the point where I didn’t feel a need to build myself back up again

Then my best friend reminds me that there is someone out there who knows me

She reminds me that she is my adhesive

As I start to repair myself I only use the adhesives that keeps me strong

I remember my mother and how proud she would be of me if she were alive today

My family, that even when they cause me to crack, it is their love that’s holding me together

I have my dreams. My dreams are of things I want and deserve so I have myself together in order to receive them

I build myself up whenever something tries to tear me down

I have covered every crack with an adhesive stronger than I so I won’t tear myself apart

My adhesives are my bloodline

My cracks are my stories

I am a continuing project with every plan to finish

I am my creator building me up piece by piece
