Family Day at the Prison

Family Day at the Prison

A Poem by Ironbutt
"

so many broken hearts.. so many too late tears... family day at the state prison....wasted years.

"
It's  Family Day at the State Prison,
the inmates will put on a show.
It's theme will be about faith, forgiveness....
and ready to come home.
There was no lack of talent,
some performances were superb.
Tears of course were falling.
Shame and pain re emerged.
 Each inmate tried to reassure
a loved one sitting here,
that they were over the demons,
the ones that got them here.
I sit among the families, my eyes too
shed some tears yet........
I lower not my armor, built over many years.
Oh how powerful are the I love you  ,
please let me come home...
I wonder if I could take you now,
how long before you are again gone?
Yes it was Family Day at the State Prison,
everyone dressed  the same....
I watched the gates close behind me...
a makeshift barrier between the pain.
Left with burden questions...should I believe it is true?
Has faith and confinement really brought back to me the you?
Am I the bitter one, the one who refuses to change?
Or is this just a long drawn out session of shift this
heavy blame?
So many miles to drive, drive to where I call home,
sit on your empty bed...once again ... alone.
