Unconditional Love of a mother and her daughter

Unconditional Love of a mother and her daughter

A Poem by Steph

She came without warnings, instructions, or labels
Still I knew without doubt, she'd be tough to handle
She'd challenge me daily with her bright mind and wit
Remind me often to never settle for "as good as it gets"

She'll disregard my advice, guidance, and praise
Because we all knew everything when we hit those teen ages
I'd be "just her mom" only standing in her way
She'd be counting down the days when she doesn't have to stay

She'll hate me for choices I make she can't understand
Until she's here in her mom's shoes holding her daughter's hand.
In that precious moment, like this one now
She'll come to know the unconditional love her mom talked about

She'll found herself fast forwarding to the day
Her baby girl's ready to leave but she wants her to wait
She believes in her girl it's nothing like that
She knows the hard reality, she's been where her girl's at

She thinks about the way she was with her mother
And remembers when she thought she knew better
She'll think about the times her mom held her tight
The laughter, games, and all the fun times

She'll recognize her mom but in a different light
She may not have been perfect but she always tried.
She'll start to become nervous cause she knows she'll fall short
She'll find faith once again when she hears her mom's voice
Coming from somewhere deep within her
"Never give up. Parenting has its rewards."

She'll try hard to protect her from this reality we can life
But how can she protect her from heartache, pain, and strife
She'll take on the world and she will expect nothing less
But still have one foot out the door cause mom's always stressed

She'll keep begging for freedom, she's old enough now
You'll go against it at first but you won't tie her down
You are all too familiar with this dynamic you share
Sometime long ago it was you who stood there
Claiming to have it all figured out
You get lost in that moment as if you are back in time now

So you give her space, Let her find herself, and spread her wings to soar
Waiting with open arms and understanding when her dreams find many closed doors.
You'll spend sleepless nights worried if you prepared her enough.
You know this world is rough

You'll want to drag her home, whenever she calls
Still you fake a smile, give her hope, and let the tears silently fall
Allowing life to teach it's hard lesson when things don't go get way at all

Until this day comes, tho you hope you are wrong
Your heart will ache but life will go on
The day will come when the ache disappears
You pick up the phone and her voice is what you hear

"It's me Mom. I miss you. I called to say I was wrong."
Tears will roll down your face as you listen on
"Forgive me Mom" her voice filled with remorse
"The world out here is tough, however, you prepared me if course"
You'll her your mom chuckle and say, "I've been there before"
She'll ask if you're okay and if you need anything
You'll say "Mom I love you and yes one more thing"

"What's up my dear daughter? What else did you need?"
"Mom it's a girl, will she be just like me?"
"Congratulations baby girl! And yes times three"
"Mom I need you, I can't do this alone"
"Honey you can, you'll learn as you go."
"Mama Mama I get it now"

"She is my daughter and it's my turn now
The story is the same, some details altered a bit
I already love her. Does it get better than this?
An unbreakable bond I'll never forget"

"There were times in my life, I took you for granted I know
One day she will be the same young girl ready to go
I'll remind myself it's all part of the plan
Daughter's never understand mother's
Til they hold their daughter's hand"

"Just know you're always with me if only in my heart
You will always be my mother, we could never truly part"

"We're bonded for life, and I'll never wish it undone
Thanks for all you've taught me and all you let me learn on my own
Mom I'm so lucky tho you don't hear it enough
You have me the most precious wonderful gift.
You're unconditional love."
