Without treating the present infection on the tooth, it will spread on the pulp thus causing the tooth to eventually loosen and fall out. Some patients may prefer to have their tooth extracted, especially in cases that it causes too much pain. However, extracting a tooth may cause the surrounding teeth to become crooked. If the teeth become crooked, the ability to manage to have a good bite will be loss.

Endodontic therapy, also known as a root canal therapy, is a treatment of the tooth aiming to eliminate the present infection, as well as protecting the tooth from subsequent infections. The treatment is carried out in the pulp of the tooth that usually stops the tooth from falling out and eliminates the pain.

Endodontic therapy usually requires numerous sessions. A dentist who specializes in tooth pulp (root canal) problem is called an endodontist. Endodontics may be performed by an endodontist or a dental surgeon wherein the dentist takes out the diseased pulp. The whole perimeter of the root canal will be cleaned and sealed.

Patients are usually fearful of undergoing endodontic therapy. This fear is unwarranted as the procedure, when carried out by a trained endodontist or dental surgeon, is relatively painless because of the local anaesthesia given to patient.

When the dentist agrees that the procedure performed was a success, filling or placing a crown may also be done to protect the tooth.
Endodontics therapy involves the complete removal of everything that is inside the root canal. The cavity is then cleaned, and formed. An inert filling along with cement usually fills the cavity.

After
endodontics therapy the tooth is considered dead because the nerve tissue has been removed and the infection has been eliminated. The patient will no longer feel pain on the affected tooth. But remember that a tooth that has the root canal filled is more brittle than a normal tooth.
