ACTING THE PART

ACTING THE PART

A Poem by Bill Grimke-Drayton

Pre-positional angst plays havoc with the psyche,
And the laughing cavalier springs into action
Like a jack-in-a-box, to perform his latest tricks,

Which, concealing the stark reality
Behind the facade of a grimace, spread
Thickly over us, a collaborative audience,
Who play our jocular part in the entertainment,

Screaming for blood, although we don’t know
We are the pack of hyenas, as they howl
With pain or pleasure or both.

Who is this soi-disant comedian,
A fly-by-night - passing through,
Making way for others
To take his place in the queue?

We’ll expect nothing from him, as we always did,
And now he knows, it doesn’t matter. We’ll
Punctuate his sentence with a full stop.
