It Took Time

It Took Time

A Poem by Skylar Elizabeth Hunter

it took time
for me
to love myself
to find beauty
in me
to respect myself enough
to not break
every time
someone walked away
but you
you ignorant
selfish
cold-hearted
thief
you stole
all of that
for one night
you took
my rights
my power
my strength
my voice
my everything
and you ripped it to pieces
with every thrust
every touch
my skin burned
bubbled and bruised
with every inch of you
forced inside
every inch of me
and it's not fair
that i lay here
afraid to be naked
in tears
being numb to
everything but the stinging
that you left
in me
when you decided
i was nothing more
than an object
to use
and abuse
it took time
to build myself back up
when i was stripped
to my bare
cold
nothingness
it took time
to stop breaking
every time
i heard your name
it took time
to be
human again
and now
you want more

About
I tend to hold onto the good memories I had with people before we fell through. I remember the reason we spoke in the first place and what kept us going. But I tend to forget why we stopped. And w.. more..
