The Dream is a Lie

The Dream is a Lie

A Story by B

If I told you to stop dreaming, would you?
If I told you every dream you had ever had was the devil reaching into your mind, would you resist the urge to fly away into the colorful lands of dreaming?
Could you? Is it even possible for humankind to not dream? Is it our punishment for what Eve did in Eden? Or is it simply a perverse attempt at fulfilling the endless hunger of Lucifer's blackened soul?
A dream is man's hope incarnate. We dream about the way we wish things were; the way people looked, acted, sounded, even loved. We dream of world's unreachable and times long gone and those yet still to be. We wake up wishing we were still dreaming. We try our very best to grasp the final remnants of the fleeting moments of our dreams and of the places and people.
Have you ever wanted to hold onto the memory of a nightmare? Have you ever awakened in the dark, eyes pierced by the blank of night, covered in sweat, your chest moving as if you have never before breathed the air of life...and wished it wouldn't stop?
Have you ever wanted to fall back asleep and stroll directly back into that nightmare, that very moment that startled you back into the consciousness of being awake?  To look that beast in the eye, to stand by as the one you love is lost to you for all eternity? Of course you haven't, few have. Few know the true power of such an act, of the wisdom and courage to be gained from such an atrocious moment of despair.
Do you pray before you go to sleep? Do you close your eyes, pressing your palms together, all the while whispering words to an eternal presence far beyond your reach?
What do you pray for? Love? Health? Money? Opportunity? Strength?
Have you ever taken a moment and asked yourself - have my prayers ever been answered? Have I, without a doubt, ever concluded that an event took place in direct response to one of my prayers?
Did you dream that night? Was it of lands far beyond you? Of the ones you loved? Or was it a nightmare? An evil presence lurking over your flesh, feasting on the weakness in your soul...you won't remember it now anyways.
Do you keep a dream journal? Do you chronicle your endeavors into the mystical void of your mind? Do you remember them well? Do you write of nightmares, or only of dreams? Do you attempt to divine truths from those journey's in your mind?
If you do not, I implore you to begin doing so.
Now, reader, I ask you to chronicle your answered prayers. Or the days something you have aspired for is finally grasped. Now look to your dreams. You were not dreaming of a bright place in the weeks or days preceding, you were having nightmares.
Many believe that it is God who is the visage of love and caring and that the dark angel Lucifer embodies all that is fear and hatred...
What if we were wrong?

...
. an extremely compelling piece of writing, monsieur ben ... i have had my share of nightmares and my share of dreams ... i have studied them and analyzed them ... i have thought about them during the day ... i have also been guilty of daydreaming ... when i think about God, i think about the truth prevailing ... i am a human being ... i have erred and i continue to err ... but somehow, i feel that the truth is at the heart of justice ... through all the adversity that injured my life and me ... i always felt ... that i would one day let go of all the pain ... willingly ... not because anyone told me to ... and then just be free to love the one i love ... and, in that loving, find some way of reaching him the relief that i have found ... but i'll definitely think about all that you've said in this extremely thought-provoking piece of writing ... and let you know what i arrive at ... and, it's great to read your words again ...
