small lessons for the new year

A Poem by Megan Lynn Tocci

small lessons for the new year

[1]  hindsight is a series of mineshafts long abandoned.

[2]  silence can be peace and heartbreak.

[3]  strengths in areas no one will ever recognize are still strengths.

[4]  someone’s ‘universal truth’ really only comes from their limited experience.

[5]  you’re allowed to be soft in the places others tell you to toughen up.

[6]  remember birthdays.

[7]  you’ve reached the wastelands of what can be learned alone -- change course.

[8]  love, when it’s not the way you need, is a complicated thing -- make a note of who's trying.

[9]  you can dance at the cliffs.

[10]  you will.
