A Poem by Megan Lynn Tocci

it's been a long time since putting pen to paper
and letting these words do what they must

another thing lost to pandemics
or growing older, caring less (take your pick)

the lights outside click red and green and crickets
keep tempo with july and this type of alone feels different

i've learned things change, but not this:
these chasms inside that summer can't fill quite all the way up.

waiting instead of living and
an empty i can't begin to make you understand
and it kills me

to think this feeling is the one
thing i'll never shake

watching a bruise fade slower than it should and wondering
if all this goes much too deep to be loved.

It sounds as though something has ended and nothing has replaced it. Bruises, however, do eventually fade, and pain is forgotten with time. Not minimizing hurt, just recalling experience.
