Sunday Paper

Sunday Paper

A Poem by Megan Lynn Tocci
"

We’re out of sugar again.

"

sunday paper:

Is anything more tragic than waking up on a

rainy Spring morning to

the slow breathing

of a stranger who has shared your bed for 25 years?

Maybe you could turn back the clock as easily as you

turn on the coffee-maker,

but we’re out of sugar again

so you pour cold milk into cracked glasses

as he chuckles

at a three-paneled comic

in the Sunday paper.

They've been married for twenty-five years, so this is a typical run of the mill morning conversation. It may not be pretty but we learn to fill in those cracks a little better than before, each time.

It makes me wonder if people still read the paper on Sunday mornings. ...but the comics, now there's a Sunday morning ritual! Good thought process, Meg.
