Forever

Forever

A Poem by Grace Elizabeth Fleming
"

aka: The Selkie's Song

"

My darling

You have a light, light hand

When you lay it on mine

And I fear I will slip away

         I am here

         But not forever

Heaven knows

Spring is a fickle creature

Coming when she pleases

And going when she must

Earth holds her

With a lineman's touch

Letting her fall back

To the sea

         I am here

         But not forever

Everyone

Needs to be touched

You no less than I

But do you not know

That this is not my skin?

What you hold

It isn’t mine

         I am here

         But not forever

My darling,

You have a light, light hand

When you lay it on mine

And it will be a cold, cold night

Put down your jacket

For a while

Steel your fingers

Against the line

Or I feel I will slip away

         I am here

         But not forever

Steel your grip, beloved

I see the coming tide

         I am here

         But not forever

I enjoyed this poem. I like the feel of old and experience in the poem. Wisdom comes with time and life. A lot of true statements in this poem.

About
I love to write. But you probably have that one figured out already. Why else would I be here? Poems are my favorite. You're just about guaranteed a sense of completion when you set out to write.. more..
