Chapter 13:

A Chapter by Melissa Ashley

She pulled me past the fence by my hair, telling me that I was protected with her. I begged to walk instead but she continued muttering to herself and ignored me. I didn’t hear any alarms behind me so I knew that nobody was looking for me. I started crying and that finally got her attention. She whipped her head around to look down at me as if surprised I was still there.

“Stop! You are very distracting.”

“Well, if you let me walk I’ll shut up.”

“Fine.” She let go of my hair so fast my face smacked off the ground. I got up slowly and realized she was already gone. I looked around and didn’t see a trace of her. I took one step backwards and she materialized out of nowhere.

“I don’t think so.” She reached for my hair again. But I smacked her hand away. Livid she rushed at me. I side-stepped her and she caught herself before turning around and rushing at me again. This time I ducked and grabbed her leg. She went flying over me and landed in a heap. I picked myself up off the ground and walked to where she was. She didn’t move as I nudged her with my toe. As I was turning away she grabbed my ankle. I fell to the ground and she started to climb on top of me. My hand brushed my thigh and I realized my daggers were still there. Laughing I unhooked them and as she was coming down on me I stabbed her in the gut and rolled out of the way as fast as possible. She lay bleeding but asked me to come over. I crawled to her but at a safe grabbing distance.

“If you go back tell Joel I am sorry for trying to take you. It was in the prophecy that this would happen but if you didn’t notice I don’t pay much attention to it.” She gasped for air. “You are good, Chosen One. I hope you lead the Qunato into war and bring them out as winners. I am truly sorry for what I’ve done and hope you will accept my apology. If you don’t know, since you have killed me you will get my powers when I die.”

“I’m sorry too for stabbing you. But if you don’t mind me asking, what powers do you have?”

“Child it is ok and the powers that I am giving you voluntarily so you can have the full involvement are very little. I have the ability to take on any form. I can make myself transparent so I don’t dissipate my energy. I have a mind prober so I can read what you’re thinking but I have to make contact with you.” She coughed and blood streamed out of her throat. Her features changed again and she was the little girl Candy.

“Wait. You actually are a young person?”

“Yes. I am. The. Last thing. I can…”

“You can what? Candy!” I shook her violently. She opened her eyes for a second time. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out a slip of paper.

“All. You need. Is in this.” She grasped my hand and put the paper in it. She let out a sigh and her body relaxed and as she closed her eyes a warm feeling in my arm started. Looking down I realized my arm was doing that glowing thing again. A stray tear slipped down my cheek and landed on her gut. As I watched it closely, her wound started closing. The warm sensation in my arm faded and was replaced by burning. I started screaming and it got even more intense. It hurt so much I laid down and curled myself into a ball.

When I awoke the fire was gone. My face was stiff with dried tears and I was not on the ground. Sitting up my body felt uncoordinated. My eyes adjusted as I was looking around. I was in a hut with bottles of stuff lined against the walls. I stretched my legs and got up. I walked towards the door and stumbled over a rug. Landing on my ankle I cursed. But as I sat there in pain I looked through a crack in the wall I saw a girl speaking to a man. It looked like they were arguing. I attempted to get up and knocked down a bottle of Stellar Whiskey. It fell to the floor and shattered. I limped to my bed and shut my eyes right as the man opened the door. He crouched down to the ground and started looking around. Finding nothing he arised and walked towards where I lay.

“I know you’re up. A bottle doesn’t fall by itself.”
