Chapter 12:

Chapter 12:

A Chapter by Melissa Ashley

After I promised the girl that I didn’t know how to use my power she finally allowed me to walk with her.  After a few hours of walking we came to a fence and a keypad. The girl touched her hand to the keypad and looked deep in thought. All of a sudden her eyes flew open and as if in a trance she typed in a code in the box. The gate beeped and swung open. Staring outside of the fence I realized I was free if I just took a step. Looking puzzled the girl walked out and looked back at me.

“Well aren’t you gonna come with me?”

“I…uh…didn’t think it would be this simple. I mean aren’t they going to come hunt for me?”

“Joel wants you to have freedom no matter what it costs. If you feel trapped, then his motto doesn’t really make since.”

“What’s his motto? And if he wants us to have freedom then why was there a fence and a password to get out?”

“His motto is “Birds are meant to fly, not be trapped in a cage.” And the only reason there is a fence and a password is because he only entrusts some people to actually leave the premises.”

“Then doesn’t that defeat the whole freedom thing?”

“No, because you saw for yourself there’s a lot of land outside The Sanctuary so if someone felt like running away such as yourself they would have hours to go before they actually reached a checkpoint. If not for me, you would have thought you already escaped and then presumed walking and would come to one of these where you would never know how to cross. So I’m going to help you, all you have to do is cross this here fence.”

Feeling suspicious I shook my head no.

“Why?” Anger seeped into the little girls’ words.

“I think I’ll head back instead. Joel had wanted to speak with me before I so rudely ran away. So… I’m just gonna go”

I took off running again. But this time instead of making it far, I tripped and fell. As I was getting up a shadow fell over me. The girl was standing there menacingly as her features changed into something more evil and older.

“Wha…what are you?”

The laugh that came out her, I mean it, was horrifying. It sent chills down my spine.

“Darling. I’m your worst nightmare.”
