Chapter 10A Chapter by Melissa AshleyAfter what I presumed was an hour. I finally
stopped, my lungs burning and throat parched I realized I didn’t have anything
to drink. I collapsed to the ground exhausted. I was never going back, they’d
have to hunt me down and kill me. Looking at the sky I noticed that the sun was
already setting. That means they will be
coming after me soon. I got up in fear that they were following me
and hurried farther into the foliage. Glancing around I saw a small wood cabin
nestled between two trees. Hurriedly I ducked out of sight. Creeping towards
the back side of the cabin, I made my way to the window. When I was going to
look in somebody grabbed my wrist and yanked me down. Screaming I yanked my arm back ready to strike
out. “Sorry, sorry please don’t hurt me”! I opened my eyes and found a little girl
cowering beneath my hand. “Oh I am so sorry I promise I won’t hurt you.” The little girl looked up smiling with delight. “I believe you, hahaha I knew you wouldn’t hit
me but the look on your face was priceless,” sticking out her hand she said “My
name is Candy but my mom calls me Candace”. Laughing I shook her hand. “Katelin but my
friends call me Katie or Kate.” “So what are you doing sneaking around my
house?” Looking ashamed I muttered a sorry. “Are you in trouble with Mr. Parr?” “You know him?” I said suddenly nervous this
girl was going to betray me. “Who doesn’t he’s like a hero to all of us
reapers”! “What do you mean “a hero” did he like save you
all from dying or something?” I said bitterly. “No he finds all of his when we are little and
helps us harness our power. I’m the youngest, he found me a couple of days ago,
hidden in my parent’s cupboard, crying because my parents died during the plague.” “Oh, I am so sorry.” “No, I hated them. The only reason I was crying
was because I didn’t eat for five days and my stomach was hurting”. “I’m glad that Joel found you but me and him
aren’t exactly friends.” “Ahh you’re not a reaper”. “Umm…”. She interrupted me by making a shushing sound.
I quit talking as she took my hand and closed her eyes. After a minute my hand
started to feel funny. I tried to shake my hand out of her grasp but was unable
to move a muscle. My hand started glowing brightly as the feeling slowly
creeped up my arm and throughout my body. It didn’t hurt but it scared the hell
out of me. She
gasped and let go of my hand, shaking. She was trembling so hard that she fell
to the ground. Before she hit the ground I was thinking of helping her but
knowing I wasn’t fast enough I just shut my eyes and imagined grasping her and
pulling her close to my body. Not hearing her hit the ground I opened my eyes
and stared in amazement. © 2016 Melissa Ashley |
