Chapter 4

A Chapter by Melissa Ashley

She opened the door and we walked in. In a chair sat Joel reading a magazine.

“Joel!” I went to run to him and then I felt excruciating pain throughout my body. I fell and curled into a ball, tears rolling down my face.

“That wasn’t necessary Deloris.”

“Sorry Mr. Parr my rules were if she were to run to push the button.”

I could barely hear them over the buzzing in my ears. Joel went over to Deloris and took out a gun.

“NO!!!” I screamed “She didn’t know not to!”

Joel looked at me and then at Deloris. Finally, he put the gun back in his coat pocket.

“Very well, one person died already at your expense.”

I was mortified, “Who?”

“Jack the man who hit you over the head with a rock.”

“You killed him?” I stuttered

“Yes.” He said simply.

This was not the Joel I knew. I looked away in disgust. My Joel would never do that.

“Your excused Deloris…um thank you.”

I could tell he was trying his hardest to be like my Joel. I continued to stare at him as Deloris left the room. Finally, he looked over at me.

“So I guess I should probably tell you what’s going on.”

I didn’t say anything just nodded. He motioned to a chair.

“So I’ll start from the beginning I guess.”

“That’d be a good place.” I murmured

“Ok, well first my name is Joel Lune Parr, I was born October 31,1997 in Lunar Hospital as the clock struck midnight. Bestowing me with some…unnatural abilities.”

“Like what?” I interrupted.

“I can see when people have The Ability like myself, so I befriend them and help them on their journey to harness their power. The Ability doesn’t really have a meaning if you are wondering. We just do many things like heal, unnatural speed, kill people by locking eyes with them and snapping their will, and many other things that you wouldn’t understand yet. But how you come into this equation is that I saw you the day you were exported to prison as a little girl.  You had the aura. In other words, you had The Ability like me. I planned to befriend you then lead you to the New Beginning but when I got myself sent to prison I didn’t plan to get so close to you. When I got there you were barely seven, I was eleven. I tried to approach you like the others but you wouldn’t make eye contact, kept saying “I don’t want you to go to sleep too.” I thought you were really crazy and I misread your aura but yours was brighter than anybody’s I had ever saw. So I did my research and found out that you were more powerful than most reapers. You at the age of three started killing people. You were sent away at the age of four by your parents because you killed a crew member in his sleeping department. You told your mother that he was sleeping then she realized that you really were a killer at heart. You were her baby so she tried to convince your father that they could fix you but as a reaper himself he knew it was impossible. I was friends with your father for a long time until he died in a car crash…”

“And my mother? What happened to her?” I said numbly.

“Your mother is a brave woman. She survived because your father put a shield on her saving her instead of himself. He is the only reaper I have heard of that has been able to keep a lover alive. Your mother though, I am still in contact with, matter of fact she works for me. But I’ll let her introduce herself to you when she feels she is ready. Anyways in prison you finally came out of your shell after a year of me trying my hardest. The guards made bets that you’d kill me shortly. They all lost because you never once tried to kill me instead your eyes were always filled with loyalty and remorse. I knew you missed your parents but there was nothing I could do it was against the rules to talk about your family. But Katie you need to practice using your ability again before it fades and you can’t access again. It’s almost time.”

“Time for what?”

“Time for war, mon ange”
